100Cr6 Roller Screw Components: Engineering & Sourcing Guide

100Cr6 (1.3505) is a through-hardening bearing steel. Screen temperature and environment below, then confirm grade, cleanliness, heat treatment, and duty against component data.

Request an engineering review

Preliminary material screening

100Cr6 roller-screw screen
Initial screen only; engineering review is required.

Use expected component temperature, not ambient.

Select the operating conditions and run the screen. If the result is inconclusive, the next step is an engineering review using your drawing and load/duty information.

What the material data supports

These references describe bearing steels and bearing products. They give selection context, not a rated operating envelope for a roller screw assembly.

58–62 HRC

A common bearing-ring range

SKF lists this range for some 52100/100Cr6 bearing rings. The specified hardness for a screw, nut, or roller must follow its section size, heat treatment, measurement location, and design.

Reference: SKF bearing data

120–200°C

Bearing guidance varies

SKF gives different maximum temperatures for standard bearing designs based on heat treatment. Stabilization can extend some bearing applications, with a load-rating reduction. Do not use these as roller-screw limits.

Specify cleanliness

The grade name is not enough

100Cr6 is supplied in variants with different cleanliness and inclusion characteristics. State the required quality and evidence in the purchase specification; a process label alone does not define fatigue performance.

Material specification and evidence

ISO 683-17:2023 covers delivery requirements for several groups of ball and roller bearing steels, including through-hardening grades. Confirm the material standard, product condition, and order requirements on the actual mill certificate.

Example values from the Swiss Steel Group 1.3505 / 100Cr6 data sheet. Product standard, steelmaking route, and heat analysis can change the values and requirements for a specific order.

Roller-screw manufacturer example

A Schaeffler roller-screw selection guide lists 100Cr6 for a pretreated, induction-hardened special shaft and for through-hardened nuts and rollers. It gives 59–63 HRC for the listed special shaft, 58–62 HRC for the nuts and rollers, and a maximum operating temperature of 180°C for those configurations. These are supplier catalog values for specific designs, not general 100Cr6 limits or approval for another screw.

Alternatives and trade-offs

Compare a material change against the full component design. There is no reliable universal percentage conversion for load capacity between these grades.

Cost and sourcing boundary

Price depends on cleanliness level, heat treatment, finishing, inspection, order quantity, and supplier. Request a quote against the same drawing and quality requirements before comparing options.

Fatigue life: what the standards do and do not tell you

ISO 281 defines dynamic load ratings and rating-life methods for rolling bearings within its stated product and design scope. Its life result depends on more than steel grade, including bearing design, loading, lubrication, and contamination. A roller screw has its own contact geometry and system conditions; applying a bearing rating-life equation to a roller screw without a validated model is an engineering inference, not an ISO 281 rating. Confirm the model and assumptions with the component supplier.

Frequently asked engineering questions

Are 100Cr6, 52100, and GCr15 interchangeable?

They are related bearing-steel designations, not a substitute for checking the governing standard. Compare chemistry limits, product condition, cleanliness, and the mill certificate for the actual heat.

Is 58–62 HRC the required hardness?

It is a range listed for some bearing rings and specific roller-screw configurations, not a universal roller-screw component specification. Define hardness and test location for the actual geometry and heat treatment.

Is 150°C a hard limit for 100Cr6?

No single temperature applies to every design. A Schaeffler roller-screw guide lists certain 100Cr6 shaft, nut, and roller configurations up to 180°C. That is a product-specific catalog limit, not a general grade rating; verify the exact component, lubrication, and duty.

Does the grade determine fatigue life?

No. Grade and cleanliness matter, but life also depends on contact geometry, load spectrum, surface condition, heat treatment, lubrication, contamination, and the model used.

Can 100Cr6 be used in washdown or vacuum?

Treat both as application reviews. Washdown needs a corrosion plan; vacuum and cleanroom use also need lubricant outgassing, cleanliness, and process checks. A material name alone cannot approve either condition.

What should I request with a quote?

Send the drawing and operating envelope. Agree the material standard, heat-number chemistry certificate, cleanliness evidence, heat-treatment and hardness requirements, dimensional inspection, and any requested EN 10204 3.1 documentation in the purchase terms.
